In-depth Analysis
Lyon can hope for that scenario as they prepare to face Celta Vigo again in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Europa League. The equalizer in the 87th minute on Spanish soil in the first leg not only saved Lyon from defeat but also opened up a great opportunity for them to turn the tie around at Groupama Stadium.
Looking at the first leg, Lyon clearly dominated. They controlled the ball more, created more chances, but unfortunately managed to score only once. This indicates that Lyon’s problem lies in finishing, not in their style of play.
Moreover, Lyon is far from lacking experience and composure in European competitions. The French side reached the quarter-finals in the last two Europa League seasons and have always made it to at least the last eight in the three most recent European campaigns. Going further back, Lyon even reached the Europa League semi-finals in the 2016/17 season.
On the other hand, Celta Vigo has just returned to European competition after a nine-year absence. They also reached the Europa League semi-finals in 2016/17, but that was the last time they competed on the continental stage.
Failing to take advantage of their home ground in the first leg, despite being close to victory, Celta Vigo will face an even tougher challenge in the return leg. Losing Borja Iglesias to suspension further weakens their attacking power. Meanwhile, Endrick’s morale-boosting goal provides a huge psychological lift for Lyon, as well as for the player himself after four goalless matches.
Although Lyon is currently on a six-game winless streak, it is only a temporary lull after a sparkling run of 13 consecutive victories. Having survived the first leg, Paulo Fonseca’s team has more than enough capability to make Celta Vigo regret it.
