In-depth Analysis
In midweek, Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory away at Brighton & Hove Albion. It was not an explosive performance from the Gunners, but a moment of brilliance from Bukayo Saka was enough to earn them all three points. The win became even more significant when Manchester City were surprisingly held to a 2-2 draw by Nottingham Forest, allowing Arsenal to extend the gap to seven points. Although City still have a game in hand, the current advantage gives Mikel Arteta’s men great confidence heading into what is expected to be a very demanding period in March and April.
In reality, Arsenal’s form over the past month has not been entirely convincing. Before the hard-fought victory against Brighton, they also needed a bit of luck to overcome Chelsea despite having a numerical advantage. Earlier than that, the Gunners were held to draws by Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brentford. Overall, the North London side have been winning thanks to moments of individual brilliance or set-piece situations such as corners, rather than dominating opponents through superior gameplay. If they want to conquer both the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League, while also preparing for the EFL Cup final against Manchester City in two weeks, Arsenal will need to significantly improve their attacking sharpness and defensive solidity.
However, the story should be very different when Arsenal face Mansfield Town, a team clearly inferior in terms of quality. Mansfield currently compete in EFL League Two and sit 16th in the table, only five points above the relegation zone. Their form has also been poor, with just one win in their last ten matches. Clearly, Mansfield are unlikely to pose a serious challenge to Arsenal.
Arteta will likely rotate his squad and give opportunities to the reserve players. However, Arsenal’s squad depth this season has been quite impressive. Even with a second-string lineup, the Gunners still have every chance of securing a comfortable victory against a much weaker opponent.
