In-depth Analysis
Liverpool have just gone through a tense round in the race for a Champions League spot. With 59 points, Arne Slotâs side are still holding onto 5th place â the final position that guarantees qualification for next seasonâs Champions League. The narrow gap with Bournemouth had Liverpool fans worried at one stage, especially when Bournemouth came very close to defeating Manchester City in the midweek clash.
Andoni Iraolaâs team led for most of the match and only lost the victory in stoppage time after Erling Haaland scored a dramatic equalizer. That result not only virtually ended Manchester Cityâs title race with Arsenal, but also unintentionally handed Liverpool a bigger advantage in the battle for the top five. Instead of leading Bournemouth by just one point, Liverpool now hold a three-point cushion along with a significant goal difference advantage.
That means Liverpoolâs task in the final round has become much simpler. Just one point would be enough to secure a top-five finish regardless of other results. Even in the event of a defeat, Liverpool still have a strong edge thanks to a six-goal superiority in goal difference over Bournemouth â a gap that would be difficult to overcome in just one match.
On the other side, Brentford also enter this game with plenty of motivation. Chelseaâs win over Tottenham in Round 37 has made the race for European qualification extremely complicated. Brighton currently hold the advantage in the battle for a Europa League place, but if they fail to beat Manchester United, the door could open for Brentford.
With Sunderland facing Chelsea directly, Brentford know that a victory over Liverpool could help them pull off a dramatic late-season breakthrough. That is why the Bees are expected to approach the match at Anfield with huge determination.
However, Brentfordâs recent form is far from convincing. In their last nine matches across all competitions, Keith Andrewsâ side have managed only one victory â against struggling West Ham. In the remaining eight matches, Brentford drew six and lost two, highlighting their inconsistency during the most crucial stage of the season.
With home advantage, greater experience in high-pressure matches, and a clearer objective, Liverpool are still considered the stronger side. If they perform at their best, the Reds should have enough quality to secure a positive result and finish the season by booking their return to the Champions League.
